Is it spiritually damaging to use mobile phones before going to sleep?

Mobile phones are one of the most common devices used today. They can be used for communication, entertainment, and much more. However, mobile phones have also been shown to impact sleep quality negatively. In this blog, I will discuss the effects of mobile phone use before bed on our minds and why they're bad for us spiritually as well as physically. I didn't know much about the effect a decade ago and was impacted by it and now I share this information with my clients and students constantly and help them to understand how they can maintain a balance, especially with gadgets in the bedroom.

REM sleep is important for emotional and psychological re-balancing.

REM stands for Rapid Eye Movement, it is a stage of sleep characterized by rapid movements of the eyes, low muscle tone, and vivid dreaming. During REM sleep, the brain is highly active, and the eyes move rapidly in different directions, hence the name Rapid Eye Movement. The brain processes and organizes the experiences and information gathered during the day. This helps to improve our ability to learn, remember and make connections. REM sleep also plays a role in regulating our emotions and controlling our impulses, which is why it's so important for our overall mental and emotional well-being. So, prioritizing good sleep habits and ensuring adequate REM sleep is crucial for maintaining physical and mental health.

If you are not getting enough sleep, it can lead to a number of health problems including brain fog, anxiety, and depression, etc. In fact, research has shown that chronic lack of sleep is associated with a shorter life span. Sleeping five or fewer hours per night may increase mortality risk by as much as 15 percent. I personally see that the quality is better than the number of hours. Not everyone's body needs 8/10 hrs sleep. But make sure you have good quality rest.

Studies show that Wi-Fi radiation causes sleep disturbances.

It can also affect your sleep cycle, which is important for mental health.Wi-Fi radiation is a type of electromagnetic field (EMF) that's produced by devices like cell phones, computers and microwaves. EMFs are invisible to the human eye but have been shown to have negative effects on humans when exposed over long periods of time.

Studies show that Wi-Fi radiation causes sleep disturbances: insomnia; sleep disorders such as apnea or restless leg syndrome; fatigue; headaches; depression; anxiety

To improve your quality of sleep, do not use your phone while lying in bed and dim the brightness on your phone at night, turn off all electronic devices at least one hour before going to bed (including TVs), avoid using a tablet or laptop before bedtime (especially if they emit blue light)

Wi-Fi radiation interferes with the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep cycles.

This can cause sleep disturbances and insomnia in some people. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland, and it helps regulate your sleep cycles. Melatonin is released into the bloodstream during the night, helping you fall asleep and stay asleep. It also affects your wakefulness cycle, so that you feel awake enough to get out of bed when it's time to start your day.

The production of melatonin is affected by light exposure--or lack thereof--and Wi-Fi radiation interferes with this process by blocking signals from reaching your brain cells (which are sensitive to electromagnetic radiation). The Pineal Gland needs darkness in order for it to function properly; otherwise, there will not be enough melatonin being produced at night time when we need it most!

It is important to limit your exposure to artificial light (including devices emitting blue light) and reduce your use of Wi-Fi-connected devices, especially before bedtime, in order to promote better sleep and maintain healthy melatonin levels.

EMFs mess with your circadian rhythm which can make you feel chronically fatigued, even when you’ve had a full night’s sleep.

If you've ever felt like your phone was draining your energy, that's because it actually can. EMFs mess with your circadian rhythm which can make you feel chronically fatigued, even when you’ve had a full night’s sleep.

Looking at a mobile phone before bed is bad for our health because it disrupts our natural sleep cycle.

Finally (and perhaps most importantly), EMF exposure can cause changes in brainwave activity which affects how well we process information during waking hours as well as how quickly we become tired after consuming caffeine or sugar.

If you have teenagers or other adults these quick tips will help them as well. Do it collectively to help each other.

Here are some tips for managing mobile phones in the bedroom to avoid disrupting sleep:

  1. Turn off notifications: Turn off notifications for non-essential apps, especially those that emit bright or flashing lights.

  2. Use blue light filters: Most smartphones have a blue light filter feature that reduces the amount of blue light emitted from the screen, which can interfere with sleep.

  3. Keep your phone out of reach: Keep your phone away from your bed or put it in another room to reduce the temptation to use it before going to sleep.

  4. Establish a bedtime routine: Set a specific time to turn off your phone and stick to it every night. This will help train your brain to associate bedtime with relaxation and sleep.

  5. Read a book or listen to relaxing music: Instead of using your phone, try reading a book or listening to relaxing music before bed to help you unwind and fall asleep more easily.

Mobile phones are a great way to stay connected with friends and family. But, it's important to remember that they can also be a source of stress and anxiety. I hope you enjoyed this blog, sure many of us know it already sees it as a gentle nudge or a reminder for better choices.
