Passion Flower: The Herb You Need to Know About for Relaxation

Life can get pretty hectic, right? Between work, relationships, and the ever-present to-do list, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and stressed. For me, this feeling reached a peak a few months ago when I experienced a sudden panic attack.  It was a scary experience, but it also led me down an unexpected path – to the calming embrace of passion flower.

Passion flower (passiflora incarnata) is an herbal supplement used historically in treating anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and hysteria.

Life throws curveballs, and sometimes those curveballs come disguised as a full-blown panic attack.  That's exactly what happened to me just days before a long-awaited trip to Guatemala. While relaxing and watching TV, I felt an unusual throbbing in my heart, breathlessness, fear of something terrible happening, and sweating. Looking back, it was undeniably a panic attack. To calm myself down, I instinctively began doing Reiki, focusing on deep breaths until I regained control. I also walked around, drank water, and used somatic movements to ease my anxiety.

Interestingly, just before this incident, I had dreamt about Passion flower. This herb was unfamiliar to me, and I hadn't felt drawn to it before. However, as I was placing an online order for tinctures, I unexpectedly felt compelled to add Passion flower to my cart. To my surprise, it arrived in two days, even though the usual wait time was a week. Looking back, it feels like this was a significant moment, a message being revealed to me.

As soon as I recovered from the panic attack, I researched Passion Flower and discovered its potential benefits for anxiety and panic attacks. I took the tincture immediately, and it helped me feel grounded and centered. The overwhelming wave of anxiety subsided. This experience served as an initiation into working with this medicine in a mystical way. The plant kingdom offers a wealth of resources that can support our soul's evolution. By surrendering and looking inward, we can find the balance we seek.

Since then, I've noticed the beginnings of anxiety arise, and I reach for passion flower tea. Coincidentally, around the same time, several of my clients were also experiencing heightened anxiety. I recommended they learn more about Passion Flower as a potential support tool. And this helped me to work on the emotions that needed attention parallelly before going on the trip. Will share this part of the story next time.

This experience inspired me to share this blog post. My intention is not to promote any particular product, but rather to raise awareness about the plants around us that can support our growth and help us release what no longer serves us.

Beyond the Physical: A Spiritual Journey

The passion flower's intricate beauty has captured imaginations for centuries. Early Spanish missionaries saw religious symbolism in its unique flower structure, associating it with the Passion of Christ. However, its spiritual significance extends far beyond this. In Aztec culture, the passion flower was known as "the flower of five suns," associated with calming dreams and visions.

A Gentle Touch for Modern Times:

In today's fast-paced world, the passion flower offers a natural approach to promoting relaxation and well-being. Whether you're seeking a restful night's sleep, managing anxiety, or simply finding inner calm, this versatile herb can be a valuable addition to your wellness routine.

Exploring Passion Flower:

Passion flower is readily available in various forms, including teas, tinctures, and capsules. It's always best to consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new supplement, especially if you're taking medications. I am not advising everyone to take it in. But we can work with this plant spirit energetically as well.

Embrace the tranquility within. Let the passion flower guide you on your journey towards a calmer, more balanced you.

My encounter with passion flower wasn't just about finding relief from anxiety; it was a reminder of the power of intuition and the healing potential of nature's bounty. Passion flower offers a natural approach to promoting relaxation, sleep, and overall well-being. Whether steeped in history or embraced for its calming properties, this captivating vine invites us to explore the gifts that surround us, helping us grow and release what no longer serves us. • They can happen anywhere, at any time, even during sleep.

  • They typically last for a few minutes to half an hour, but the aftereffects like feeling shaky or on edge can linger for a while longer.

If you experience a panic attack, there are things you can do to calm yourself down. Here are some tips:

  • Focus on your breathing: Take slow, deep breaths from your diaphragm.
